Integrating building science with data science at AUROS Group
The tools and technology today enable building owners to reach very low energy and healthy building performance without spending a premium in construction costs. Fuel poverty, inequitable indoor air quality, pandemics, and poor outdoor air quality demand that we change the way we look at buildings. Evidence-based building performance is rapidly becoming table stakes in the discussion of sustainability or sustainable development. Experienced building owners have figured out that aligning the financial, social, and environmental goals of new and existing buildings is best achieved by integrating building science and data science. The fundamental building blocks include building simulation, open integrated technologies, real-time database & historian and a simple dashboard. When considered early in design, there should be no premium in the cost of construction to build smart and high performing buildings.

Craig Stevenson
Craig is President of AUROS Group, which is a technology and consulting company based in Pittsburgh, PA. Craig is widely known for his role in establishing Pittsburgh as a leader in "Evidence-based Performance" for the built environment. Evidence-based Performance uses technology to bridge the gap between "hoping" a building is performing as designed to "knowing" a building is meeting its performance goals. With 25 years of construction experience, Craig ensures building owners have the data required to build and operate the highest performing buildings at the lowest possible costs.
Craig is co-author of the recently released book, The Power of Existing Buildings Save Money, Improve Health and Reduce Environmental Impacts and the much referenced ASTM article, Project Case Studies and the Lessons they Teach about Whole Building Envelope Air Leakage Testing. Finally, Craig holds two United States patents in the field of data science for the built environment.

Derrick Tillman
Bridging the Gap Development, LLC ( BTG ), founded in 2006, is a diversified real estate development firm based in Pittsburgh, PA. Derrick L. Tillman, President and CEO of BTG, leads the company s mission to rebuild healthy, sustainable communities through residential & commercial development by bridging the real estate and opportunity gaps in a community. To achieve this goal, BTG sets high performance goals for their breadth of projects representing multifamily affordable housing, mixed-income and market rate rental and homeownership properties as well as commercial real estate. With a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Information Science from University of Pittsburgh, Tillman uses technology to reach zero-energy-ready and healthy indoor air quality goals without paying a premium in construction costs to ensure building occupants, especially the most vulnerable, have access to a healthy and affordable home or work environment.
