PI Coresight was renamed PI Vision in 2017
Fingrid is the transmission system operator of the Finnish electric power system. This presentation demonstrates how Fingrid uses the OSIsoft PI System to improve power system analysis in power system operations, particularly how the PI System stores and visualizes the power system data using PI ProcessBook, PI Coresight and Asset Framework for control center operators and specialists. The presentation includes high-level functional architecture of the setup and focuses on Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) measurements and phasor measurement units (PMU) that are common data sources for monitoring and operation.
With complex systems, it is not always clear which analysis algorithm works best for a specific problem, and the use of some algorithms may require high level expertise. To overcome the problem, Fingrid has integrated Mathworks MATLAB with PI System databases using the PI OPC interface. The combination makes it possible to utilize PI System data sources and calculation functionalities together with mathematical analysis performed by MATLAB, thus providing the opportunity to utilize PI System data in research and development projects that require a flexible platform.
In this presentation, Fingrid will provide an example of PI System and MATLAB integration by sharing its in-house developed disturbance analysis tool that monitors real-time data using the PI System and MATLAB algorithms to detect disturbances and anomalies in the power system.
In addition, this presentation discusses how visualization and automated analysis have increased the analysis quality and the use of available measurement data as well as further development plans, such as integrating PI Event Framework with analysis algorithms and performance considerations related to OPC protocol.
