j5 Work Instructions

Productively Manage the Continuous Stream of Work Instructions

Solution Overview

Every day on an industrial site, there is a stream of Work Instructions issued by planners, maintenance personnel, operations supervisors and controllers at all levels and areas within the process. Unfortunately, there are still inadequate, time consuming methods such as paper, word processor, spreadsheet and homegrown applications being used to plan and complete these Work Instructions. Poor traditional work management methods are not integrated with other software, such as Data Historians and CMMS systems, resulting in dual capture and information silos. This increases organizational risk and inefficiencies. To remedy these pains, companies across the world utilize j5 Work Instructions. Allowing their operations teams to plan, record, manage, view and complete any Work Instruction in a consistent and efficient way with a web browser and mobile device.

j5 Work Instructions saves time by making it easy to automatically or manually schedule daily operator tasks, and by providing a clear Work List that is relevant to each individual. It improves the accuracy and completion of tasks by reducing the risk of human error, for example by automatically scheduling tasks that may be forgotten day-to-day. It improves communication between operations teams, management and other employees, and improves decision-making because more relevant information is available when needed. j5 Work Instructions assists with record keeping and reporting for compliance purposes, and it ensures that information is retained in a consistent format for easy retrieval and analysis in future. j5 Work Instructions can also display real-time data from the OSIsoft PI System to give personnel a deeper understanding of a scheduled task.

Solution Approach

Client-side: Any authorized user can access j5 Work Instructions from standard web browsers (Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) with a network connection to the central server. No other client-side software is required. Android, iOS and Windows mobile applications are also available, allowing syncing between the control room and field operations. Central Server: j5 Work Instructions requires a central application server running Windows Server 2012+ and a SQL, Oracle or PostgreSQL database. A hosted or virtual machine is also feasible for the central server. PI System Integration: j5 Operations Management Software offers a standard interface with the OSIsoft PI System for the integration of real-time and historical data, assets and event frames. This data can be used for reports, detail on Work Instructions and workflows triggered by events. The following other j5 Applications are available on the same user interface: j5 Operations Logbook, j5 Shift Handover, j5 Event Manager, j5 Inspection Rounds, j5 Standing Orders, j5 Permit to Work, j5 Incident Management, j5 Action Management, j5 Management of Change, j5 Product Movements and j5 IndustraForm® Templates (a flexible technology for transforming spreadsheets and forms into enterprise applications). j5 IndustraForm Templates, j5 Inspection Rounds, j5 Operations Logbook and j5 Standing Orders are also available on j5 Mobile.
