Solution Overview
Data from process automation control equipment is typically limited to plant floor
operations, largely because this data is often collected in a variety of independent
solutions or must be collected manually. This makes it time-consuming and difficult to
get consistent, meaningful data from automation control systems into data tools and
business systems that need this information. As a result, today, less than 14 percent
of manufacturers have completely connected production data to the rest of their
enterprise. At the same time, the pace of technological innovation is accelerating and
manufacturers are under pressure to keep pace amid global competition.
Powered by OSIsoft’s PI System, the Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk Historian makes
it possible to collect and store production data to be use in real-time KPI reporting or
trending on local operator consoles. While production data is collected and stored by
FactoryTalk Historian, the data can also be seamlessly aggregated to an enterprise
PI System for data analysis on a more enterprise-wide scale. The enterprise PI System
can aggregate historical data from production systems, such as Rockwell or other
third party data sources, into a unified enterprise-wide data infrastructure supporting
operational intelligence and business system integration.
With FactoryTalk Historian and an enterprise PI System, operational data from
production reaches the enterprise seamlessly for integration with business systems
or further analysis with various BI tools. Leveraging Asset Framework (AF) at both the
production and enterprise level, you can create or modify asset definitions and then
push them down to FactoryTalk Historian for consistency across the organization.
This provides a hierarchical organization so users see all the information they need
at a glance.
The plug-and-play compatibility reduces implementation time and provides a
centralized management for the master data definition. The real-time visibility into
operations makes it possible to optimize energy usage, lower production costs,
receive notifications of process anomalies, compare actual production to target
production, and improve operational and supply chain productivity.
